The Vineyard

Intent on creating new world versions of his favourite Italian wines, Mario sought a property where he could grow the Nebbiolo and Sangiovese varieties in Australia. 

In search of the ideal terroir, Mario visited Heathcote and became convinced that the ancient Cambrian soils of the Mount Camel Range with its well-drained soils, temperate climate and evenly distributed rainfall, would suit these Italian red varieties, as well as the Shiraz grape for which Heathcote is renowned. 

Formerly a large sheep-grazing property, the 49.50 hectare plot was planted with 7 hectares of vines in 2000 and 2001. Mario oversaw the importation of Italian grape clones, together with the planting of newer clones already available in Australia. 

The first release of the Vinea Marson Syrah and Sangiovese occurred in 2004. 

In 2005 a dry style Rosé made predominantly from Sangiovese, was first produced and 2009 saw the release of our estate-grown Viognier. In recent years, a Prosecco and an Italian style white blend, the Grazia, have been added to the Vinea Marson range, made with fruit grown in the Alpine Valleys in north-eastern Victoria.
